If you are looking for a way to lose weight and keep it off then you really ought to be considering using a plant based diet for weight loss. Now before I go any further I want to point out that a whole food plant based diet and a vegan diet are two completely seperate things.
Plant Based Vs Vegan
A whole food plant based diet is pretty much as it sounds, eating real food such as potatoes, broccoli, carrots etc…
A vegan diet on the other hand is eating anything that does not contain animal products and includes processed food and oils, and processed food is never a good option for losing weight or for your health in general.
So, why should you use a plant based diet for your weight loss goals? Well straight off the bat, statistcally people who follow this eating plan generally have lower BMI’s than those that include animal products in their diet.
Another great side effect of using a plant based diet for weight loss is that you may experience other side effects such as a reduction in cholesterol levels.
Generally your body makes the right amount of cholesterol that it needs, however when you are eating an animal or animal product such as an egg you are then consuming that cholesterol. This raises your own so of course it makes sense that if you eat a plant based diet then your cholesterol levels are good.
And it’s not just cholesterol levels that get better, statistically people that follow this type of eating plan are less likely to suffer from heart issues or type 2 diabetes, and those that have these conditions and switch to a whole food plant based diet often see these conditions reverse.
I would add that if this is something you want to do then you should discuss it with your physician first so they can monitor your medication.
Easy To Do
I think what I particulalrly like about using a plant based diet for weight loss is that you don’t really need to think about it. No thinking about calories etc.. jsy fill your plate with good food and go! And if you want to exercise then that would really help however a lot of people find that they lose weight without adding exercise into their routine.
Because of all of these factors, people who adopt a plant based diet really thrive on it. In fact very few who switch to it go back to their old way of eating.
I suppose it comes down to if you are giving your body what it needs to function properly then you feel better within yourself and it simply becomes a natural way to eat day in day out for the rest of your life.
Transitioning To A Plant Based Diet
Now some people do find it difficult to make the transition to a purely plant based diet because veggies have been something put on the plate to accompany the meat rather than being the star of the show,
Just get a little creative with your food. There is so much you can make and if you are using plenty of foods such as chickpeas, lentils. mushrooms and beans then you are going to be getting plenty of protein in your diet as well as the carbs so you are getting a good healthy balance.
One of my favourite meals to make is chille con carne using lentils and mushrooms which gives a real meaty depth and I defy anyone to be able to tell the difference between that and a meat made one.
When using a plant based diet for weight loss you want to make sure you have plenty of greens and starches included in your meals. The reason you want to include foods such as cabbage or kale or spinach is because there is something in them called thylakoid, which helps to turn off the hunger switch and stops you wanting to snack on unhealthy foods. So if you have them on your plate and add the starches which will fill you up you’re going to find that you will end out losing weight without feeling hungry all the time and developing cravings.
Avoid Cooking Oil
One thing that is important to note is your use of oil. Oil from plants can be just as bad for you as butter or animal fats, they are full of calories and the fats in them can still cause artery damage and lead to heart disease.
The good news is though that oil is not that hard to replace, you can use a little bit of water of stock when frying and get pretty much the same effect as using oil.
And if you are used to dressing a salad with olive oil replace it with a little apple cider vinegar which gives an amazing taste and can also be beneficial for weight loss.
So if you are serious about getting rid of your excess weight and you want to do it in a way that is healthy for you and wont result in yo yo dieting then you may just want to use a plant based diet for your weight loss goals. Not only is it good for you but it’s good for the animals and the planet too.
